Woman Sues Dunkin Donuts Over Diabetic Coma Caused by Sweet Coffee

According to Philly News, a Philadelphia woman is suing Dunkin’ Donuts for serving coffee that she said was too sweet, so sweet that it sent her into a diabetic coma. Danielle Jordan, 47, filed a personal injury lawsuit against Dunkin’ Donuts shop on Frankford Avenue claiming she ordered coffee with artificial sweetener on June 15, 2009. Instead, an employee served her coffee with sugar in the brew, according to court documents.

Jordan downed the sweet Dunkin’ Donuts drink and suffered light-headedness, dizziness and numbness in the lower extremities. Jordan suffered a diabetic shock that resulted in a trip to the emergency room. As a result of drinking a coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts, Jordan had to increase her diabetic medication and sustained a loss of life’s enjoyment.

Dunkin’ Donuts attorney replied that the franchise encounters thousands of customers on a daily basis and that the shops do not provide a customer anything they do not request. The attorney went on to say that if a customer did not request a sugar substitute that the store could not be held liable, as they cannot read a customer’s mind.

The case is very similar to a historic personal injury lawsuit filed against McDonald’s over serving coffee too hot. While Jordan’s coffee seemed to be the perfect temperature, her personal injury attorney says that she suffered due to Dunkin’ Donuts’ defective product.
