Weekly Wrap-up of Recalls 02/15/15/02/21/14

This week’s recalls involve many food recalls where products contain undeclared allergens. The misbranding of these products can lead to an increase risk of consumers digesting ingredients, which can cause serious and life threatening allergic reactions.  It is very important that consumers with food allergies remain aware of the ingredients in the products they purchase and relating recalls.

Pressmaster Recalls Cable Stripping Tool (19 Feb., 2015) Pressmaster recalls Cable Stripping Tool, Xcelite,  after discovery that the tool’s plastic end cap can fly off with significant force during storage and even use. The force of which the cap disconnects can pose an increased risk of impact to users and bystanders. Thus far no injuries have been reported but consumers are encouraged to discontinue use of the tool immediately and contact the company for instructions on how to return the tool in exchange for a free replacement. The tool subject to this recall can be identified by “Xcelite” and “CJS 200”, which are printed on the tool.

Food and Drug Administration- Recalls/Safety Alerts

Unilever United States, Inc. Recalls Breyers No Sugar Added Salted Caramel Swirl (16 Feb., 2015) Unilever United States, Inc. recalls certain tubs of Breyers No Sugar Added Salted Caramel Swirl due to an undeclared allergen, almonds. The product subject to the recall was distributed in 1.5-quart (1.41L) paperboard tubs bearing the UPC code 7756738393 and the best buy date of NOV2915GB.  The product was distributed nationwide to retailer stores.

Spiceco Issues a Correction on the Recall of Pride of Szeged Sweet Hungarian Paprika (17 Feb., 2015) Spiceco issues a correction on the recall of Pride of Szeged Sweet Hungarian Paprika. Spiceco has issued the recall due to an undeclared allergen, more specifically peanuts.  The company is recalling the lot numbers 091617PAHU05PS and 091717PAHU05PS, which bear the UPC code 078006000102. No illnesses have been reported thus far associated with the recalled lots.

Chocolate By Design Inc. Recalls Milk Chocolate Assorted Character Icing Pops, Christmas Icing Pops, and Triple Heart Icing Pops (18 Feb., 2015) Chocolate By Design Inc. recalls Milk Chocolate Assorted Character Icing Pops, Christmas Icing Pops, and Triple Heart Icing Pops due to an undeclared allergen, more specifically egg. The recalled products were sold to several stores in New York, New Jersey and Virginia. The Icing Pops are made to order and sold in unmarked bulk boxes. The Pops are not coded.  Thus far there have been no illnesses related to the recalled Pops.

Kirsch Mushroom Co Inc. Recalls Chilean Mushrooms (18 Feb., 2015) Kirsch Mushroom Co Inc. recalls Chilean Mushrooms due to undeclared sulfites. Consumers with a sensitivity to sulfites are subject to the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they ingest the recalled product. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported thus far. The mushrooms were sold to Sloan supermarket in Buffalo NY. The supermarket has made corrections on the label indicating the product may contain sulfites.

Old Home Kitchens Recalls Sock It To Me Crème Cake (20 Feb., 2015)  Old Home Kitchens Recalls Sock It To Me Crème Cake due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, more specifically pecans.  The products subject to this recall bear a production code of 150301100 thru 150310700.

Michigan Brand, Inc Recalls Pork Sausage Products (17 Feb., 2015) Michigan Brand, Inc recalls Pork Sausage Products due to misbranding and the presence of an undeclared allergen, more specifically soy protein. Please see the link above for a list of the products subject to the recall and the corresponding labels for identification purposes.

Ruiz Foods Recalls Sausage Products (17 Feb., 2015) Ruiz Foods Recalls Sausage Products due to misbranding and the presence of an undeclared allergen, more specifically soy. 4.5-lb. cases of “Egg Sausage and Cheese Wrapped in a Flour Tortilla” is subject to this recall. The product can be further identified by the establishment number “EST. 17523A”.  Please see the link above to further identify the product by label.

Kenosha Beef International Recalls Beef Products (19 Feb., 2015) Kenosha Beef International recalls Beef Products, “Fully Cooked Black Angus Ground Beefsteak (chopped and formed)”, due to potential contamination with Listeria  monocytogenes.  The beefsteaks were available for purchase in 35.3 ib. boxes bearing the establishment number “EST. 10130 and the product number 87657.

ESS Foods Recalls Pork Belly Products (20 Feb., 2015) ESS Foods recalls Pork Belly Products due to lack of inspection. The recalled products were available for purchase in 40 lb. boxes marked as “Pini Polona Pork Belly Boneless”..
