A recall notice has been issued for 350,000 Ring video doorbell devices, following reports of them catching fire. The company, a subsidiary of Amazon, received 85 reports from consumers complaining about “incorrect doorbell screws” that led to 23 doorbells igniting, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The fires resulted in minor property damage and burn injuries. Ring, which sells video doorbells designed to make homeowners feel safer have become popular in the past several years. These devices have been installed by many homeowners in an effort to add security to their homes.
The recall involves Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), model number 5UM5E5 smart doorbell cameras. The video doorbells have a blue ring at the front and come in two colors: “satin nickel” (black and silver) and “venetian bronze” (black and bronze). They were sold with a mounting bracket and a USB charging cable. The two-way audio doorbell can be hardwired or battery-powered and supports night vision. The Ring logo is printed on the bottom front of the doorbell and the model and S/N are on a label on the back of the doorbell and the outer packaging. Consumers can determine if their doorbell is included in this recall by entering the doorbell’s serial number.
Consumers should immediately stop installing the recalled video doorbells and contact Ring for revised installation instructions. The affected doorbells cost approximately $100 and were sold on both Ring’s company website and in their stores, as well as on Amazon.com between June 2020 and October 2020.
