How to Protect Your Family From Hotel Bed Bugs

Traveling to Florida hotels means not sleeping in your own bed, sheets, or pillows. If you are sleeping somewhere other than your home, beware of bedbugs that lurk in hotels and motels. Bedbugs are pesky intruders that cause severe itching and welt-like bites. Worst of all, bedbugs can hitch a ride from a hotel to your home.

Thoroughly examine your hotel room and do not place your luggage in the room until you have finished the bedbug inspection. Bedbugs are least likely to be found in the bathroom, they prefer to be closer to where people may be sleeping.

Pull back the hotel linens and check all the way around and under the mattress and behind the headboard. Look for blood stains or small black dots that resemble black mold or ground pepper. Bedbugs like to hide in corners or seams of the bedding.

Check behind picture frames, alarm clocks and hotel books. Examine the cushions and seams of any couches or chairs in the room.

Avoid leaving your luggage or clothing on the hotel room floor. Place your luggage on the luggage rack, and place clothing on hangers in the closet, not on the floor. For extra protection, place your luggage and clothing in plastic zip-up bags.

Upon returning home, wash all your clothing—even the items you did not wear—in hot water. Bedbugs cannot survive in temperatures above 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Inspect and vacuum out your suitcases before storing them away.

An Orlando injury lawyer can provide guidance if you have been injured while visiting one of the many theme parks in Florida.
