A bicyclist was seriously injured after being struck by a car in the Villages on Tuesday morning.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the victim was a 61-year-old man who was riding his bicycle in the golf cart lane on Hillsborough Trail, just before 7:00 a.m. The vehicle struck the man from behind, and seriously injured him. It is not known why the car entered the golf lane. The driver immediately fled the scene.
The victim was fortunately wearing a helmet, which could have very well saved his life. Witnesses were able to identify the vehicle that left the scene. The car was described as a 2003 Jaguar, and the vehicle’s license plate was recorded by an eyewitness. Unfortunately, a description of the driver was not obtained.
A similar hit-and-run bicycle accident occurred in early September 2020, where a bicyclist was struck and left for dead on a road in Baldwin Park, near Lake Baldwin Lane and Lindale Avenue.
Bicycling has increased in popularity in Central Florida, not only as a form of exercise but also as a way of commuting to and from work. Even though the number of bicyclists on the road has gone up, drivers continue to not show proper attention to riders on the road.
It has been reported that every six hours, a bicyclist is on the receiving end of a catastrophic injury. Even if someone is wearing a helmet, he or she can still be seriously injured after being struck by a car. Wearing a helmet can reduce the severity of injury, but a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can still result from a bicycle accident.
Some of the most common causes of bicycle accidents include actions of a negligent car or truck driver failing to yield to the bicyclist, speeding, ignoring blind spots, opening a car door, pulling into traffic in front of the bicyclist, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Bicycle accidents also occur due to limited visibility, hazardous road conditions, and defects in either the vehicle or the bicycle, including helmet and other accessory defects.
