The huge oil spill resulting from the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of  Mexico last week is threatening the fragile coastline of 6 northern Florida counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay and Gulf counties.  As a result, Governor Charlie Crist today issued a State of Emergency for those counties and his order stated:

“The oil slick is generally moving in a northerly direction and threatens Florida’s coast”

The State of Florida is now a part of the national and other state agencies’ efforts to control the spill which has now grown to over 600 square miles.

While the Department of Environmental Protection is the lead agency for Florida, David Halstead, Director of Emergency Management, was named state coordinating officer.

Crist’s declaration order reported:

“Oil continues to so spill from the well as all efforts to stop the discharge have failed and may not succeed for an extended period of time.”
