April 1, 2014, Dyson issued a recall of its Bladeless Portable Electric Heaters. The heaters were found to in some cases develop an electrical short and overheat, increasing the risk of a fire hazard.
The recall is expected to affect about 338,000 units of the heaters sold in the U.S. and about 43,000 units of which were sold in Canada. The recall encompasses all Dyson Hot heaters and Dyson Hot+Cold heaters with the model number AM04 and all Dyson Hot+Cold heaters with the model number AM05. Consumers can identify the heaters by the above listed model numbers, which can be found above the Dyson logo on the product information sticker on the underside of the heater’s base.
The heaters are 23 inches tall with a round base and a long upper body that is ring shaped. The plastic heaters, which have no external fan blades and are remote control, were produced in colors including silver, black and silver, blue and gray, gray and silver, pink and gray, purple and gray and white and gray. From September of 2011 until Marc of 2014 the heaters were available for purchase by consumers at Target, Costco, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Macy’s, Sears, Kohl’s, Lowe’s and various online retailers as well including but not limited to Dyson.com, HSN.com, and WalMart.com.
Thus far Dyson is aware of 82 incidents involving the recalled heaters and among those incidents were four reports of heaters either having burned or melted internal parts. There have not been any reported injuries or property damage reported thus far. However consumers are encouraged to discontinue use of the recalled heaters and contact the company for a free repair.
