Central Florida’s interstates, roads and highways are some of the most dangerous in country. Approximately 395,000 car accidents happen on Florida roads every year, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
I-4 has been named as the most dangerous interstate in the country, based on fatalities per mile. According to MetroPlan Orlando, the following intersections have been mapped out as the most dangerous ones in the area between the years 2014 and 2018.
- Sand Lake Road and John Young Parkway, which involves a flyover bridge that is currently under construction;
- Pine Hills and Silver Star intersection, also part of the Pine Hills Road Safety Improvements project;
- Pine Hills Road at Indian Hills Road;
- Oak Ridge Road and Texas Avenue, which is part of the Oak Ridge Road Safety Improvements project;
- John Young Parkway at Oak Ridge Road, another intersection part of the Oak Ridge Road Safety Improvements project;
- John Young Parkway at Americana Boulevard at Conroy Road; and
- Central Florida Parkway at John Young Parkway, where a traffic study is currently being conducted.
A number of factors were used when determining whether a specific intersection was dangerous, including the number of car accidents that occurred at those intersections, the severity of the accident, whether pedestrians or bicyclists were involved, and whether fatalities resulted from the accidents. Many of the dangerous intersections listed were also in active construction zones, which increased the likelihood of an accident.
It is interesting to note that the John Young Parkway seems to be a frequent contender for dangerous intersections. As construction is ongoing in this area, drivers are encouraged to exercise increased patience and be completely aware of their surroundings and avoid distracted driving behaviors.
