While no injuries have been reported on the Iron Rattler, a Six Flags roller coaster in Texas, its operation has been shuttered. This temporary shutdown comes in the wake of the tragic death this past weekend.
While the reason behind the latest closure seems to be preventative, the original accident has many wondering if the death could have been prevented, and if more oversight into theme parks, amusement parks, and other, similar venues may be called for.
Some details have been cleared up regarding the death of Rozy Esparza, she was sitting alone in the car, not with her son and previously stated. Additionally, her son-in-law, who was seated in front of her, has no recollection of her mentioning concerns about her restraint.
Regardless both Six Flags and the roller coaster’s manufacturer are launching investigations into what caused the accidental fall, and the Texas Giant roller coaster will remain closed until further notice. Texas authorities have said there are no signs of foul play in the accident, and that they have no comment on what lead to Ms. Esparza’s death.
While this tragic accident is investigated, it is important that we all understand the risks associated with roller coasters and other rides at theme parks.
