Florida has recently failed to pass legislation to ban drivers from texting behind the wheel, but that won’t stop some counties from taking measures to make their roadways safer. Florida is one of only six states across the nation to not have distracted driving legislation on its books.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, employers and local governments are passing legislation banning workers from texting while driving. This keeps the roads safer as well as limits the liability for employers.
Seminole County is the most recent to consider legislation for its employees. The new policy would ban workers from using all electronics while driving for work, whether they are in their personal or state-owned vehicles. It seems as if the counties are trying to pick up the slack because the state has failed to ban distracted driving.
“I don’t think it’s too much government,” said State Senator Nancy Detert, R-Venice. “it’s a safety issue…You’re taking your hands off the wheel. Your mind is distracted from what’s going on around you. “You’re just creating a dangerous situation for yourself and everyone else who’s a roadway user.”
If distracted driving is dangerous for county employees, it is dangerous for all drivers. Please visit our website for more information on distracted driving and contact our firm for a free consultation if you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident.
