Orlando, the heart of the Sunshine State known for its tourist attractions and vibrant city life, is also home to a stretch of highway notorious for its treacherous reputation—Interstate 4. I-4 has been named the most dangerous road in the nation and is host to thousands of accidents yearly. Despite being integral to how Floridians and tourists move across the state, this deadly stretch of road presents many unique dangers, from excessive traffic to ongoing construction. If you have been injured in an accident on I-4, an experienced attorney can help you pursue the compensation you deserve for your injuries and other losses.

At Wooten, Kimbrough, Damaso & Dennis, our attorneys are committed to helping accident victims recover the damages they need to address their physical, emotional, and financial burdens. We understand the havoc a car accident can wreak on your life and are committed to helping you hold the negligent party fully accountable for your injuries. When you partner with us, you can trust your attorney to fight aggressively for your rights, interests, and the total value of your claim.

Why Do So Many Accidents Occur on I-4?

Although every accident is unique, many of those that occur on I-4 stem from similar causes. A few factors making this highway especially dangerous include the following:

Tourists and Snowbirds

As home to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, Orlando is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country. Additionally, many residents of colder northern states migrate to Orlando during the winter months to enjoy the temperate weather. The influx of tourists in the area year-round congests the highway and raises the risk of collisions.

Speeding

The posted speed limit on many areas of the 132-mile highway is 65 mph. However, this does not stop many seasoned Florida drivers from traversing I-4 at speeds of 70 mph, 80 mph, or more. Unfortunately, speeding can significantly slow a driver’s reaction time, making stopping in enough time challenging when unexpected slowdowns occur.

Excessive Traffic

As Florida’s only interstate highway that runs entirely east to west, I-4 is almost always experiencing heavy traffic. Despite the state’s growing population and status as a constant tourist destination, little has been done to improve the infrastructure to improve the flow of traffic. In its current state, I-4 cannot keep up with the number of motorists on the road who are forced to use it due to the lack of alternate routes.

Constant Construction

Due to the many issues with I-4, the I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project began in 2015 to improve the highway’s infrastructure. Although the completion of the project promises a new expressway, pedestrian tunnels and bridges, and other safety improvements, the highway has become even more treacherous with construction underway. Slowdowns, debris, and the reduction of navigable lanes, among other hazards, can increase the likelihood of accidents.
