Are Theme Parks Underreporting Injuries?

The major theme parks recently released statistics regarding injuries received in the parks during the first quarter of 2015, according to a recent article in the Orlando Sentinel. The major theme parks in Florida are overseen by Florida’s Department of Agriculture, and are not required to report injuries, as others are. Riders Rescued from Stalled Hulk Coaster

Yesterday, March 25, 2015, at around 5:45pm the Incredible Hulk roller coaster at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure came to a sudden and unexpected halt.  For nearly two and a half hours, at least 12 people were stuck on the stalled coaster waiting for rescue. The ride came to a halt near  a platform which allowed 20 of the riders to exit immediately and safely utilizing one of the platforms located on the side of the ride.  The remaining 12 were stuck beyond access to the platform forcing them to wait rescue from the Orlando Fire Department. No injuries were reported and all the passengers were safely recovered from the stalled roller coaster.  While no further information has been reported and Universal has not stated the cause of the stoppage, they are investigating.

Of the incidents resulting in injury or death, 35% occur within marked crosswalk areas. Pedestrian deaths are preventable and that is why in June 2012, a local grassroots pedestrian safety coalition, Best Foot Forward, was formed to address this growing problem in Central Florida.  According to Katy Magruder with Best Foot Forward, only about 30% of motorists actually stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, even though it is required under Florida law. A recent joint effort between the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department is seeking to crackdown on violations of Florida’s traffic law regarding yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks. According to a report…
