Crosswalk Crackdown in Orange County

In the State of Florida drivers are required to stop and remain stopped until pedestrians cross at crosswalks, but unfortunately the failure of drivers to properly yield to pedestrians is responsible for 20% of all pedestrian deaths and injuries in the Orlando area. Of the incidents resulting in injury or death, 35% occur within marked crosswalk areas. Pedestrian deaths are preventable and that is why in June 2012, a local grassroots pedestrian safety coalition, Best Foot Forward, was formed to address this growing problem in Central Florida.  According to Katy Magruder with Best Foot Forward, only about 30% of motorists actually stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, even though it is required under Florida law. Weekly Wrap-up of Recalls 02/15/15/02/21/14

This week’s recalls involve many food recalls where products contain undeclared allergens. The misbranding of these products can lead to an increase risk of consumers digesting ingredients, which can cause serious and life threatening allergic reactions.  It is very important that consumers with food allergies remain aware of the ingredients in the products they purchase and relating recalls. Recalls RSS Pressmaster Recalls Cable Stripping Tool (19 Feb., 2015) Pressmaster recalls Cable Stripping Tool, Xcelite,  after discovery that the tool’s plastic end cap can fly off with significant force during storage and even use. The force of which the cap disconnects can pose an increased risk of impact to users and bystanders. Thus far no injuries have been reported but consumers are encouraged to discontinue use of the tool immediately and contact the company for instructions on how to return the tool in exchange for a free replacement. Recalls RSS Marin Mountain Bikes Recalls Children’s Bicycles (10 Feb., 2015) Marin Mountain Bikes recalls Children’s Bicycles due to discovery that the subject bicycles’ handlebars can loosen or separate during use.  The defect can cause the rider to lose control and increase the risk of crashing. The bicycles can be identified by “Marin” being printed on the seat and down tube.
