BMW of North America is recalling certain model year 2014 X5 SAV vehicles, which were manufactured between December, 2013 and March, 2014. The recall is due to the discovery of a defect with child safety locks. The rear locking mechanisms may not have been manufactured correctly, causing a previously engaged child safety lock to disengage when the rear door handle is pulled.

The defective rear door lock could allow a rear passenger, even a child, to pull on the rear door handle twice from the vehicle’s inside and be able to open the rear door, while the vehicle is either parked or in motion. This defect can lead to serious risk of injury and/or death for a rear passenger especially if not properly secured in a seatbelt.

BMW is notifying owners, of the effected X5 SAVs and dealership will be replacing the affected locks at no extra cost to consumers. Owners concerned that their vehicle may have a similar issue or falls within the recall are encouraged to contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.

Often manufacturers upon discovery of a defective part or product will recall that item to avoid possible injury or deaths resulting from the defect, however these recalls are not allows done before a consumer is caused harm.
