Toyota has recalled Sienna minivans made in 2004, 2005, and 2007 through 2009 model years.  The Toyota Sienna is the second-best-selling minivan in the United States market.

A defect has been discovered inside the shift lever allowing a mechanism to break resulting in the vans shifting out of park without change in pressure to the brake pedal.  This defect creates a risk of the minivans rolling away.

The car manufacturer is aware of at least 21 “minor” accidents resulting from the defect in the United States and three in Canada. Toyota spokeswoman Cindy Knight has also reported two major injuries.

Owners of affected Sienna minivans are being notified by mail to bring the affected vehicles to the dealership for repair.

Toyota has recalled about 615,000 minivans in the United States alone, in addition to smaller numbers registered in Canada, Mexico, Germany and Guatemala.
