Researchers from the Pharmacy Department of Changhai Hospital in Shanghai, China report unfavorable findings after 15 clinical trials of the drug Avastin.  The research revealed the use of Avastin was associated with the risk of hypertension and gastrointestinal hemorrhage and perforation. Adverse Events Inc., another organization that monitors FDA approved drugs has also reported similar findings of risks posed by the use of Avastin. Those proscribed Avastin are cautioned as the drug is still currently used in the treatment of cancer patients.

Avastin a drug made by Roche Holding AG, and is designed to block formation of blood vessels that feed a tumor. The drug’s main use is in treating Cancer among other treatments like for patients with metastatic colorectal.

The drug was approved in 2011 to treat breast cancer by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drug’s use has been noted for slowing tumor progression, but had no effect on the quality of life or eventual fatality rate.  Those using Avastin are urged to ask their doctor about the drug and its possible side effects.

From November 1997 to September 2012, Avastin has been linked to 52 serious reports of necrotizing Fasciitis worldwide. The company in a news release also linked 17 deaths to the drug’s use.
